Skip the Sappy Stuff: What to Write in a Valentines Card

Skip the Sappy Stuff: What to Write in a Valentines Card

Valentine’s Day is coming up faster than you think, and with it comes the Valentine’s Day card exchange. I think we can all agree that there are way too many cheesy poems and sickly-sweet sentiments that come with the holiday, and that it’s time to skip the sappy stuff and brainstorm some less cringy content for this year’s Valentine’s Day card.

Nothing is worse than opening a card and it is basically blank inside - just one small, boring statement. We are here to make sure that doesn’t happen to you! Take a look at some of our favorite, non-mushy ways to approach this year’s Valentine’s Day message!

Humor

One easy route to take when considering what to write in your Valentine’s Day card is to incorporate some of your fabulous whit and playfulness. Your sense of humor is obviously your gift to the world and should be shared, especially with that special someone who is lucky enough to be your valentine. Whether you’ve found the perfect pun printed on the outside of the card or you take my favorite route - playing off of one of your inside jokes - taking advantage of an opportunity to kid around and tell some jokes could be the perfect thing for your valentine message.

Heartfelt and Sincere

Hey, just because it’s serious and comes from the heart doesn’t mean it’s sappy! Take a few minutes to consider the reasons you love and care for your valentine. Maybe it’s a list of reasons why you love them, or maybe it’s a couple of sentences detailing how grateful you are to have them in your life. Find the perfect valentine from some of our love cards and get writing!

Quote Someone

Let’s face it, sometimes we just can’t say it as eloquently or cleverly as someone else can. I’ll be the first to tell you that sometimes when I sit down to write a card I have forgotten all the things I wanted to say. Is there an author that you both love or a TV show that you enjoy binging together that has a character you’re both obsessed with? A quick Google search of the author or character with the term “quote about love” or “quote about relationships” could have the potential of bringing up the perfect phrase for your loved one’s Valentine’s Day card. But whatever you do don’t use that overused “the mountains are calling” quote… ;)

Include a Gift or Start Planning Your Next Adventure

Where words fail, gifts speak. That’s how the saying goes, right? A simple gift card to your valentine’s favorite restaurant, the movies, or even to the spa (don’t knock massages or facials!) can be just the thing they hope to find in their card, or even a hand-written explanation of your gift. Perhaps you book a room at a nice hotel nearby for a little staycation or are planning a special adventure to take together; a simple “Happy Valentine’s Day” and a short explanation of your gift to them could be the perfect way to show your special someone how much you love them. And don’t forget this is the perfect place to plant a seed for your next adventure together. Maybe it’s simply a “Let’s set some dates for that backpacking trip over dinner” or “How about this year for that canoe trip we’ve been talking about forever?”

Whatever direction you decide to go when writing in a Valentine’s Day card, make sure it comes from the heart and that it reflects your love for your valentine and the relationship you have with each other.
